The hill where Buddhism arrived in Sri Lanka in 247 BC — 1,840 granite steps, a white stupa on the summit, and a view across the whole dry zone.

The route

Airport to Mihintale: what to expect

Four and a quarter hours from the terminal, thirteen kilometres east of Anuradhapura. Mihintale is where the monk Mahinda, son of the Indian emperor Ashoka, is said to have met King Devanampiya Tissa while the king was hunting, and converted him — the moment Buddhism entered Sri Lanka.

A stairway of 1,840 granite steps climbs the hill in broad, shallow flights under frangipani trees. Along the way are the ruins of a monastic hospital with a stone medicinal trough, a refectory, and the Kantaka Chetiya with some of the finest early carving on the island. At the top: the Ambasthala dagoba where the meeting is said to have happened, a white summit stupa, and a bare rock you scramble up for the view.

It is quieter and considerably more affecting than Anuradhapura itself, and most visitors skip it entirely.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Colombo Airport to Mihintale — FAQ

How many steps are there at Mihintale?

1,840, in broad shallow flights rather than a steep climb. Most reasonably fit visitors take 30 to 40 minutes to the top with stops. Shoes come off at the upper terraces, and the granite gets very hot by mid-morning.

Is Mihintale worth visiting alongside Anuradhapura?

We think so, and it is often the more memorable of the two. Anuradhapura is vast and takes effort to read; Mihintale is compact, has a clear story and a genuinely good view. Half a day covers it.

When should I climb Mihintale?

Early morning or late afternoon. The steps are exposed and the terraces at the top are bare rock, which is punishing at midday. Sunset from the summit is the best of it, but leave time to come down in the light.
