The route

Airport to Medirigiriya: what to expect

Medirigiriya Vatadage stands on a low rock outcrop north of Polonnaruwa, reached by a flight of stone steps through scrub. What waits at the top is one of the most complete circular relic houses in Sri Lanka: a small central stupa surrounded by three concentric rings of granite columns, with four seated Buddhas facing the cardinal directions.

The Vatadage at Polonnaruwa is more elaborately carved and gets all the visitors. Medirigiriya is older, plainer and set in open country with nothing around it, and you will very often have the whole terrace to yourself. For anyone who has already done the main sites and wants something quieter, it is the obvious next stop.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Colombo Airport to Medirigiriya — FAQ

What is a vatadage?

A circular relic house — a small stupa enclosed by concentric rings of stone columns that once supported a wooden roof. Only a handful survive in Sri Lanka; Medirigiriya and Polonnaruwa have the best.

Is Medirigiriya worth the detour?

If you have already seen Polonnaruwa and want somewhere with no crowd, very much so. It is about forty minutes north and you will often be alone there. If you are choosing only one vatadage, Polonnaruwa's is more finely carved.

Is there an entrance fee?

A modest separate fee is charged at the site. It is not covered by the Polonnaruwa ticket.
