Colombo Airport to Kekirawa Taxi
A dry-zone junction town between Dambulla and Anuradhapura, and the turn for two little-visited ancient sites.
Airport to Kekirawa: what to expect
Kekirawa is a working town at a crossroads rather than a destination, but its position is useful: Dambulla is forty minutes south, Sigiriya an hour, Anuradhapura forty minutes north-west, and Mihintale half an hour. Guests who want the Cultural Triangle without staying in a tourist town sometimes base here.
Two sites nearby repay the detour. Yapahuwa is further west, but Aukana — a 12-metre standing Buddha carved from living rock in the 5th century and considered one of the finest in Sri Lanka — is under an hour away by the Kalawewa road, and almost nobody goes. Sasseruwa, its unfinished twin, is nearby.

Worth a stop on the way
Aukana Buddha
A 12-metre standing Buddha cut from the rock face in the 5th century. Reached by a quiet road and rarely busy.
Kalawewa
A 5th-century reservoir built by King Dhatusena, still irrigating the district, with birdlife along the bund.
Colombo Airport to Kekirawa — FAQ
Is Kekirawa a good base for the Cultural Triangle?
It is central and cheap — Dambulla forty minutes, Sigiriya an hour, Anuradhapura forty minutes — but it has little accommodation aimed at visitors. Habarana or Sigiriya are more comfortable; Kekirawa suits travellers who want a working town.
What is the Aukana Buddha?
A 12-metre standing Buddha carved from a granite outcrop in the 5th century, near Kalawewa reservoir. It is among the finest ancient sculptures in Sri Lanka and receives a fraction of the visitors the main sites do.
How far is Kekirawa from Sigiriya?
About an hour by road. It sits on the main route between Dambulla and Anuradhapura, so it is easy to fold in on a Cultural Triangle circuit.
