Airport to Habarana: what to expect
Habarana is not a destination so much as a hinge. Sigiriya is 20 minutes away, Dambulla 25, Polonnaruwa an hour, Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks are on the doorstep, and Trincomalee is two hours further on. That geography is why so many of the country's better safari lodges sit here rather than in the towns.
The drive from the airport is a straightforward three and a half hours north-east. The road is decent for most of it, and the last stretch through the dry-zone forest is genuinely pleasant — you will pass tanks, paddy and, in the right season, elephants crossing near Minneriya.

Why stay in Habarana instead of Sigiriya?
Habarana puts you within 25 minutes of Sigiriya, Dambulla and Minneriya, and an hour from Polonnaruwa, so you can cover the whole Cultural Triangle from one hotel without repacking. Sigiriya village is closer to the rock itself but has less choice of accommodation.
Is the elephant gathering worth timing my trip around?
Between roughly July and October, several hundred elephants congregate on the receding bed of Minneriya tank — it is one of the largest wild elephant gatherings on earth and it is 30 minutes from Habarana. Outside those months the herds disperse and a Minneriya safari becomes ordinary.
Can the transfer include a stop on the way?
