Knuckles Range
A wild mountain range of cloud forest, grassland and deep valleys — one of the island's best trekking regions and a World Heritage landscape.
Why Knuckles Range is worth your time
The Knuckles Range is a rugged mountain massif north-east of Kandy, named for a row of peaks that resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist. Its slopes hold a mix of habitats, from dry forest and grassland to misty cloud forest, and it was inscribed in 2010 as part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka World Heritage Site.
It is a place for walking. Trails climb through forest, past waterfalls and across open grassland, with views over deep valleys. Some routes lead to remote villages such as Meemure, reached by long, winding roads and still lightly touched by tourism.
The range is much quieter than the main hill country around Nuwara Eliya or Ella. Many visits are based on a guide, a night or two in simple lodgings and a focus on slow travel, birdwatching and local culture.
The things worth stopping for
Day and multi-day treks
A range of walks from easy forest paths to long, challenging ascents. Guides are strongly recommended and sometimes required.
Cloud forest and grassland
Higher slopes have a different, cooler ecosystem from the lowlands, with mist, mosses and endemic plants.
Meemure village
A remote village in a hidden valley, reached by a long, rough road. A glimpse of traditional rural life, with basic homestays.
Waterfalls and rock pools
Streams and falls throughout the range offer natural swimming spots after a hot walk.
Birdwatching and wildlife
The forest is home to endemic birds, butterflies and small mammals; the range is an important area for biodiversity.
Homestays and local food
Simple village stays offer home-cooked rice and curry, and a chance to meet the communities that live here.

How to reach Knuckles Range
About four and a half to five hours from the airport to the gateway towns of Matale or Rattota, then onward by narrow mountain roads, sometimes in a four-wheel-drive. The last stretches are slow.
It is best combined with Kandy or Dambulla, rather than a stand-alone visit, so the journey is part of a wider route.
