Belihuloya
A small river town where the hill country meets the south — swimming pools in the river, waterfalls and quiet walks, away from the tour-bus circuit.
Why Belihuloya is worth your time
Belihuloya is a small town on the Belihul Oya river, in the foothills where the hill country drops towards the southern plains. It sits on the route between Ratnapura, Balangoda and Haputale, and it is where green valleys, tea slopes and river gorges meet.
It is a place for slow days. The river has pools for swimming, there are waterfalls within reach, and the walking is easy, through rice paddies and village paths. Many travellers pass straight through on the way from the hills to the south coast, but a night here rewards you.
It is also close to Horton Plains, Bambarakanda Falls and the southern hill country, which makes it a useful, quiet base for exploring without going all the way up to Nuwara Eliya.
