The place

What Parrot Rock and Secret Beach actually are

Parrot Rock sits directly in front of Mirissa’s main beach. At low tide you can walk or wade out to it and climb a set of steps to the top for a view over the bay. The stairs are described as rickety, and the crossing is dangerous at high tide, so check the tide before you go.

Secret Beach is a small cove tucked around the corner from the main beach, reached by a short tuk-tuk ride followed by about ten minutes on foot. It has a few restaurants, sunbed hire and snorkelling rentals. The sheltered ‘Blue Lagoon’ end is shallow and protected by a rock wall, while the Palm Cove end is rockier and better for snorkelling.

Both appear in every Mirissa itinerary, so neither is empty. Parrot Rock is crowded at sunset; Secret Beach is calmest first thing. They are worth an hour or two together, not a day.

What to look for

Worth your attention

The wade to Parrot Rock

Low tide leaves a sandy stretch to the rock. It is the part of the day when the sea is most manageable.

The view from the top

From the rock you see Mirissa’s curved beach, the palms and the fishing boats.

The Blue Lagoon end of Secret Beach

Shallow, rock-sheltered water that is easier for weak swimmers than the open bay.

Palm Cove

The rockier side, which is the better bit for snorkelling when the sea is calm.

Straight advice

Before you go

Do this

  • Check tide times first; low tide is when the walk to Parrot Rock works
  • Go to Secret Beach early to have it nearly to yourself
  • Take a tuk-tuk to the road, then walk down the path
  • Bring your own snorkel kit or accept the rental prices on the sand

Know this first

  • The steps up Parrot Rock are rickety; take care in the wet
  • Crossing at high tide is dangerous
  • Secret Beach is small, and late morning brings the day-trippers
  • Rip currents and rocks mean swimming beyond the sheltered lagoon is not casual

Good to know

Parrot Rock and Secret Beach — frequently asked

What is Parrot Rock in Mirissa?

A rock directly in front of Mirissa’s main beach that you can reach on foot at low tide and climb for a view over the bay.

Is Secret Beach still secret?

No. It is on every Mirissa itinerary, but it is smaller and calmer than the main beach, especially early in the morning.

How do you get to Secret Beach?

Most people take a tuk-tuk to the road above the cove and walk about ten minutes down the path. Walking from the town centre is longer and uphill.

Is it safe to swim there?

The Blue Lagoon end is shallow and sheltered. Outside it, rocks and waves make swimming less simple, so ask locally on the day.
