The place

What Coconut Tree Hill actually is

Coconut Tree Hill is a small headland covered in tall coconut palms, about 15 to 20 minutes’ walk east of Mirissa’s main beach. The last stretch is a short climb of five to ten minutes. From the top you look down on the sea and out along the coast through the palm trunks, which is the whole attraction.

One travel blog describes it as part of a private coconut farm. Recent write-ups report no entry charge, though it is sensible to carry a few small notes in case someone asks. The path begins near the coastal road and is not clearly signposted.

It was a quiet viewpoint a decade or so ago. It is now one of the first things people photograph in Mirissa, and several guides say sunset is when it is busiest. A small bar has appeared at the top in recent years, and at least one visitor found its music intrusive.

What to look for

Worth your attention

The palm-framed view

Look down through the trunks to the sea. The classic picture is taken from the path on the way up, not from the top.

Sunrise light

Early visitors report having the headland to themselves. It also avoids the midday heat on the climb.

The coastline east

On a clear morning the coast curves away east with fishing boats offshore.

The queue for the shot

Depending on the hour you may see people waiting their turn at the photo spot. That is the part to avoid.

Straight advice

Before you go

Do this

  • Go at first light; the light is softer and the crowd is thin
  • Wear proper shoes — the path is uneven and can be muddy after rain
  • Take the coastal road if the beach is too high at high tide
  • Allow 10–15 minutes at the top if you only want photographs

Know this first

  • Falling coconuts are a real hazard; do not stand directly under the trees
  • Midday is hot and sunset is the busiest hour
  • Music from the bar at the top can spoil the quiet
  • The path can cross private land; keep to the established track
