Two and three quarter hours north of the terminal on a flat coastal road. Puttalam sits at the top of a huge shallow lagoon, surrounded by the salt pans that supply much of the country's salt, in dry scrub country that feels a long way from the wet south.
Few people stay for the town itself. It matters for where it points: Kalpitiya and its kitesurfing lagoons are forty minutes west across the causeway, and the Wilpattu entrance about an hour north-east. It is also the last town of any size before Mannar.

Why would I go to Puttalam?
Mostly as the junction for Kalpitiya, Wilpattu or Mannar. The salt pans and lagoon birdlife are good, but the town is a working one with little for visitors.
How far is Puttalam from Kalpitiya?
About forty minutes west across the causeway onto the peninsula. Kitesurfing and dolphin trips are based out there rather than in Puttalam.
Can you see flamingos near Puttalam?
Yes — the lagoon and salt pans draw greater flamingos and large numbers of waders, mostly November to March. Far quieter than Bundala in the deep south.
