The route

Airport to Kosgoda: what to expect

An hour and three quarters from the terminal. Kosgoda is a small coastal village that has become the centre of turtle conservation on the west coast — five species nest on these beaches, and several hatcheries operate along the road.

Be selective. Standards vary widely: the better operations collect eggs from the beach, incubate them, and release hatchlings within a day or two, while the weaker ones keep turtles in concrete tanks for months so visitors can hold them. We will tell you which is which rather than dropping you at whoever pays a commission — we do not take them.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Colombo Airport to Kosgoda — FAQ

Are the Kosgoda turtle hatcheries ethical?

It depends entirely on which one. The better hatcheries release hatchlings within a day or two of emerging; poorer ones keep them in tanks for weeks or months for photographs, which reduces survival. Ask before you go, and do not pay to hold a turtle.

When can you see turtles nesting at Kosgoda?

Nesting occurs year-round with peaks between roughly November and April. It happens at night on the beach, and some conservation projects run guided night visits. Hatchling releases usually take place around dusk.

Is Kosgoda a good place to stay?

It is quiet, with a handful of small hotels and villas and very little else. Most guests stay at Bentota or Ahungalla, fifteen minutes either side, and visit Kosgoda for the turtles.
