Airport to Kalpitiya: what to expect
North from the airport through Chilaw and Puttalam, with the sea on your left for most of it and a long causeway at the end onto the peninsula. It is one of the flatter, faster drives on the island — no hills, little traffic once you clear Negombo.
Kalpitiya exists on the tourist map for two reasons: the lagoon is one of the most reliable flat-water kitesurfing spots in Asia between May and October, and the sandbanks offshore hold spinner dolphins in their hundreds from November to April. Between those, it is a quiet fishing peninsula with salt pans and very little else, which is precisely why some people go.

When is the kitesurfing season in Kalpitiya?
Roughly May to October for the main south-west season, with a shorter second window around December to March. The lagoon is shallow, flat and consistent, which is why schools cluster here rather than on the south coast.
Can I see dolphins from Kalpitiya?
From about November to April, boats go out to the sandbanks off the peninsula where spinner dolphins gather, sometimes in pods of several hundred. Trips leave early. Sightings are common in season but never promised.
Is Kalpitiya far from the airport?
It is closer than most people expect — around 115 km and two and a half to three hours, with no mountain roads. That makes it one of the more practical first or last nights on the island if you want to avoid Negombo.
