The route

Airport to Beruwala: what to expect

Ninety minutes from the terminal on the expressway. Beruwala sits immediately north of Aluthgama and Bentota, sharing the same long beach but with a very different character behind it.

The town is historically Muslim — Arab traders settled here in the 8th century and the Kechimalai Mosque on the headland is held to be the oldest in the country. There is a large working fishing harbour, a gem-cutting trade that has been going for centuries, and a resort strip along the beach at the northern end that was among the first built in Sri Lanka.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Colombo Airport to Beruwala — FAQ

What is Beruwala known for?

A large fishing harbour, the Kechimalai Mosque on the headland, a long-established gem trade, and the resort strip at the north end of Bentota beach. It has a distinctly different feel from the rest of the coast because of its Muslim heritage.

Is Beruwala the same as Bentota?

They are adjacent and share the same stretch of beach, separated by Aluthgama and the Bentota river. Beruwala is the northern end and more of a working town; Bentota is the resort spit to the south. Most people treat them as one destination.

How far is Beruwala from Colombo Airport?

About 95 km and an hour and a half, almost entirely on the Southern Expressway. Traffic on this route is rarely a problem outside the Colombo approach.
