The route

Airport to Ahungalla: what to expect

Under two hours from the terminal on the expressway. Ahungalla sits between Bentota and Ambalangoda on a broad, straight beach with almost nothing behind it but coconut palms and a few sizeable hotels.

There is no town here in any meaningful sense, no strip and no nightlife. What there is: a wide beach that stays largely empty, a turtle hatchery a few minutes north at Kosgoda, and the Madu River mangroves fifteen minutes away. It suits people who want a resort and the sea and nothing to organise.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Good to know

Colombo Airport to Ahungalla — FAQ

Is there anything to do in Ahungalla?

Very little in the village itself, which is the appeal for most guests. Within twenty minutes there is the Madu River boat safari, the Kosgoda turtle hatcheries, and Ambalangoda's mask workshops. Galle Fort is an hour south.

Is the beach at Ahungalla good for swimming?

It is wide and open with no reef protection, so conditions depend on the season. November to April is generally calm; May to September brings the south-west monsoon, strong swell and undertow. Most hotels fly flags — take them seriously.

How long is the transfer from the airport?

About 115 km and an hour and three quarters, nearly all of it on the Southern Expressway. It is one of the easier long transfers on the island.
