Negombo Lagoon
A shallow brackish lagoon behind the town, worked by outrigger canoes that have barely changed design in centuries — and the reason Negombo's prawns are worth ordering.
What Negombo Lagoon actually is
The lagoon covers about 35 square kilometres of shallow brackish water separated from the sea by a narrow spit, fed by the Dandugam Oya and drained through a channel by the fort. That mix of fresh and salt is what makes it productive: prawns, crab, mud crab and dozens of fish species, harvested by a fleet that still uses the oruwa, a dugout hull with a single outrigger and a square sail.
Boats go out at night and come back at first light. If you are staying in Negombo for a first or last night — and we suggest most guests do — walking down to the lagoon mouth around 6am to watch them land is free, unstaged and considerably more interesting than the beach.
The mangrove fringes on the eastern side are the other draw. Boat trips thread through channels between the trees, past fish traps and brush piles, with kingfishers, egrets, herons and water monitors throughout. It is quieter and less commercial than the Madu River further south, largely because fewer visitors know it is here.

Outrigger canoes with square sails, landing their catch at dawn near the lagoon mouth. Free to watch and entirely unarranged.
Mangrove channels
Narrow waterways on the eastern shore, thick with birdlife in the first two hours of daylight.
The fish market
At the northern end of the beach from around 5:30am, where the lagoon and sea catch is auctioned on the sand.
Lagoon crab and prawns
The reason the town's restaurants are worth eating in. Ask for the crab curry rather than anything continental.

Do this
- Go at first light — birds are active and the water is glass
- Agree the boat price and duration before you step in
- Take insect repellent for the mangrove sections
- Combine it with the fish market in the same early morning
- Eat lagoon crab afterwards; it came out of the water you just crossed
Know this first
- Midday trips are hot and the birdlife disappears
- Some boats use engines that are too loud for the mangrove channels — ask for a quieter one
- Water quality varies; this is a working lagoon, not a swimming spot
- May to September brings the south-west monsoon and choppier water

How much does a Negombo Lagoon boat trip cost?
Usually LKR 4,000 to 7,000 for the boat rather than per person, for about two hours. Agree the price and the route before departure. Hotels can arrange it, or you can negotiate directly at the jetties near the lagoon mouth.
What can you see on the lagoon?
Mangrove channels, fish traps, the oruwa fishing fleet, and a lot of birds — kingfishers, egrets, herons, cormorants and water monitors along the banks. Early morning is much better than any other time of day.
Is Negombo Lagoon worth visiting?
If you are spending a night in Negombo anyway, yes — it is the most interesting thing in the town and costs very little. It would not justify a special trip from elsewhere on the island, but as a first or last morning it works well.
When is the best time to go?
Between 6am and 8am for wildlife and flat water, or the last hour before sunset. Avoid midday. December to April is the drier season on this coast.
