The place

What Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil actually is

Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is the main Hindu temple of the Jaffna peninsula, dedicated to Murugan (Skanda). The present building dates from 1734, in the Dutch period. The Portuguese are recorded as destroying an earlier temple here in 1624. Older foundation dates such as 948 CE are quoted widely, but they are tradition rather than something we could verify.

It is a working temple, not a monument. You enter through a five-storey entrance tower into a Dravidian-style complex, take off your shoes, and watch worship go on around you. The best time is the late afternoon: one guide counts at least six pujas a day with three of them between 4 and 5 pm, while another lists four. Either way, arrive around four and stay for one.

Each year a festival of about 25 days, from August into early September, builds to a chariot procession. It draws thousands of devotees and the streets around the temple fill up. Come outside the festival for a calm visit, or during it for something much bigger, and plan around the crowds.

What to look for

Worth your attention

The entrance tower

The main entrance gopuram is five storeys. Other towers on the site are taller, but sources do not agree on heights, so we give none.

The late-afternoon puja

Lamps, chanting and offerings in front of the shrine. Stand to one side and follow what local worshippers do.

Offerings

Many worshippers bring flowers and camphor. You do not need to, but it explains much of what you see in the courtyard.

The festival chariots

If you are in Jaffna in August, the chariot procession is the climax of the festival; the official temple site posts the daily programme.

Straight advice

Before you go

Do this

  • Arrive around 4 pm for the late-afternoon puja.
  • Men: be ready to remove your shirt before the entrance. Women: cover shoulders and legs.
  • Remove shoes at the entrance and carry socks if the paving is hot.
  • Ask before taking any photo, and do not photograph the inner shrine.
  • Check the temple’s own site for festival dates if you are visiting in August.

Know this first

  • Photography inside the sanctum is usually not allowed; outer areas may be fine.
  • The festival makes the area crowded and parts of the day busy. Expect delays on roads around Nallur.
  • Opening hours and puja times vary between guides. Confirm locally.
  • It is a place of worship. Keep voices low and do not walk in front of people praying.
