What the Groote Kerk actually is
The Groote Kerk, or Great Church, was completed in 1755 on the site of an earlier Portuguese convent. It is the Dutch Reformed church of Galle Fort and one of the oldest Protestant churches in Sri Lanka still in use; some sources go further and call it the oldest.
It looks restrained from the outside: no central tower, with gables on the east and west ends instead. The interest is inside. The floor is paved with gravestones brought from the old Dutch cemeteries, carved with names, arms and floral motifs, and coats of arms hang on the walls.
The pulpit is calamander wood under a large hexagonal canopy, and the organ sits in a gallery above the entrance. More tombstones line the garden, and two burial chambers lie in the north garden. The Dutch government funded a restoration, and the church was re-dedicated in 2004.

Before you go
Do this
- Read the tombstone inscriptions; many mix Dutch names with dates and coats of arms.
- Look up at the pulpit canopy and across to the organ gallery.
- Walk the garden for the outdoor tablets.
- Dress modestly; it is a place of worship, not just a sight.
- Combine it with the Maritime Museum and the lighthouse, a few minutes’ walk away.
Know this first
- Opening times are not clearly published, and it may be closed during services or private use.
- Expect small crowds in the middle of the day when tour groups pass through.
- The burial chambers in the garden are damp, with steps; mind your footing.
- It is a modest building. If you expect Colombo’s grander churches, adjust your hopes.
