Dutch Canal
Cut in the 1700s to move cinnamon down to Colombo without risking the open sea. It still runs, straight and quiet, a few streets back from the beach.
What Dutch Canal actually is
The Dutch East India Company controlled the world's cinnamon supply from this coast, and moving it was the problem. The sea route to Colombo was exposed and seasonal, so from the 1740s the Dutch cut and connected a canal system running inland behind the shoreline — barges could carry cinnamon, and later coconut and arrack, in any weather.
The section through Negombo is the best preserved and the easiest to see. The British later extended and rebuilt parts of it under Gavin Hamilton, which is why locals often call it the Hamilton Canal, and the two names refer to the same waterway. Small boats still use it, and it is lined with coconut palms, low bridges and houses that back straight onto the water.
There is nothing to pay and nothing organised about it. Walk or cycle the towpath north of the main bridge in the last hour of daylight, when the water goes flat, herons come in to the margins, and the whole thing turns the colour of the sky. It is one of the more quietly pleasant hours you can spend anywhere near the airport.

The towpath north of the bridge
The prettiest stretch, with palms overhanging the water and very little traffic. Best walked or cycled at golden hour.
The old bridges
Low crossings, some of them original stonework, where you can watch small boats duck through.
Canal-side houses
Back gardens running down to the water, laundry on lines, children swimming. Ordinary life rather than a heritage site.
Boat trips
Some operators run short canal trips linking through to the lagoon — a good way to see both in one morning.

Do this
- Go in the hour before sunset when the water is still
- Hire a bicycle; the towpath is flat and the distances are longer than they look
- Head north from the main bridge for the quieter stretch
- Combine it with the lagoon in one outing — they connect
- Bring a light — the path is unlit once the sun drops
Know this first
- Sections of the canal are polluted and it is not for swimming
- The towpath is uneven in places and unlit after dark
- Some stretches run behind busy roads and are noisier than others
- It is a working waterway, not a restored monument — expect it to look lived-in

What is the Dutch Canal in Negombo?

Is it worth seeing?
As a free hour on a first or last evening near the airport, it is genuinely worthwhile — quiet, atmospheric and a piece of colonial infrastructure still in use. It is not a monument and will disappoint anyone expecting one.
